What is an Electric Bug Zapper?
An electric bug zapper, fly zapper or insect killer is a tool used to kill a number of flying insects such as wasps, mosquitos and of course, flies. In any commercial kitchen these pests pose a threat to food hygiene, so a device that eradicates them automatically and discreetly is ideal. Fly killers are available in several space-saving models, providing different power outputs to cover various spaces, so which one is best for your business?

Most flying insects are attracted to ultraviolet light as they find it easier to detect than visible light, this is a common component of all electric fly killers.
As the insect flies towards the light, it reaches the small gap between two electrically-charged wire mesh grids and completes the circuit.
Next, you’ll hear a ‘zap’ as electric current flows through the insect and vaporises it. The insect husks can then be disposed of hygienically via a catchment tray.
In the case of an electric glue board fly killer, instead of zapping the insect it is caught and immobilised by the sticky surface.
Where To Put An Electric Fly Killer
When considering where to install your electric bug zapper, there are four main factors to consider which will help improve their performance:
- Avoid entry points. The device should not be placed directly facing doors or windows, as it is designed to attract insects that are already inside the premises so it’s best not to attract them in from outside.
- Consider height. The average flight of insects is around 5 to 8 feet high, so the device is likely to be more effective at this range.
- Keep it away from other light sources. Try not to install your bug zapper near other powerful sources of light, as it will become less effective with other lights to distract the insects.
- Find the perfect placement. The ideal position for your fly killer should be between the most likely point of entry and the food. Therefore, just inside and above the main door is often the ideal place as it will tend to catch insects as they enter.
For best food safety practice, do not place an electronic bug zapper on a wall above a food preparation surface in case of a fly dropping down and potentially into the food.
Tip: Use a chain door fly screen where windows and doors are left open, this will allow fresh air in whilst being the first line of defense against flies.

The efficiency of your fly killer will depend on its surrounding environment and power output. Make sure that you purchase a fly killer that will provide appropriate coverage for the desired area. However, having ensured the best model for your needs there are several ways to further improve the performance of your bug zapper:
- Move your waste away from the kitchen. Any leftover food, even trace amounts found on packaging may be attracting flies, so if possible try to keep your bins away from the building.
- Minimise exposed waste. For most businesses it really helps to have a waste compactor to help reduce your volumes of waste, and give flies less encouragement to enter your premises. Use commercial grade garbage bags and tie them tightly to conceal organic matter from pests and never leave them inside.
- Keep it clean. An effective cleaning schedule will make your space less attractive to flies. This should include your equipment, paying attention to the spaces underneath and behind your appliances.
